You can finally play Fortnite on your iPhone and iPad again

Fortnite is back, that is, on iOS. In September 2021, Apple informed Epic that it would ban the insanely popular multiplayer shooter from the App Store, from the companies legal battle over in-app payments and commissions.

For months, Fortnite was only available on Android, but thanks to Microsoft and Nvidia, you can finally play Fortnite on iPhone and iPad.

Earlier this month, Microsoft announced a partnership with Epic Games that would make Fortnite accessible to anyone with a web browser, using the free Xbox Cloud Gaming service. Nvidia announced a similar partnership with Epic Games that also lets you play Fortnite through its GeForce Now streaming service.

If you can’t wait to play Fortnite again on your iPhone or iPad, here’s what you need to know.

For Xbox Cloud Gaming, create or sign in to your Microsoft account first

If you already have a Microsoft account, you can skip to the next section. Otherwise, you must first create a Microsoft account, which only takes a few minutes.

On your iPhone or iPad, in the web browser of your choice, go to Microsoft registration website and create a new account using an email or phone number. The process involves creating a password, adding your name and date of birth, verifying your email address, and solving a puzzle to prove that you are not a bot.

Save your username and password to iCloud or store your credentials elsewhere, as you will need them later to play Fortnite.

Now go to the Xbox Cloud Gaming website and add it to your home screen

In Safari, Chrome, or another mobile web browser, go to Xbox Cloud Gaming Website and press green Play for free button under the Fortnite logo. If you haven’t already signed in to your Microsoft account, do so now. An Xbox account is also required to play all games, so if you’re asked to create an Xbox account, do so.

Then press green Get ready to play button – this will bring up a window at the bottom of the screen asking you to add Xbox Cloud Gaming to your home screen to launch the game from there. To do this, press the share button in the navigation bar, then tap Add to home screen. You need to add the website to your home button otherwise you won’t be able to play Fortnite.

Finally, open the home screen app and play Fortnite

Once the Xbox Cloud Gaming website is on your home screen, tap Play for free, Sign in to your Microsoft account, then tap Cheek to start playing Fortnite.

An Xbox loading screen then one of Fortnite will appear. Use the on-screen controls to link your Fortnite account or play as a guest (I’ve had issues playing as a guest, so I recommend linking your existing Fortnite account or creating a new one ).

On the top left you have a number of controls to mute your microphone, quit the game, configure your controls, bring up the Xbox menu and more. For the best experience, lower the control center, make sure the portrait orientation lock button is off, and flip your phone horizontally so you can play in full screen.

As far as gameplay goes, Fortnite obviously doesn’t run quite as well as it does on your computer or game console, and the controls are a little tricky to get the hang of, but at least it gives you a way to play on the go – for as long as you have a pretty decent internet connection.

For Nvidia, how to play Fortnite with GeForce Now

As long as you’re a GeForce Now member, you can also play Fortnite on iOS thanks to Nvidia’s video game streaming service. However, unlike Xbox Cloud Gaming, you’re limited to one hour-long session at a time with the free GeForce Now subscription. After an hour, the service will automatically shut down, and while you can start another hour-long session right after that, constant interruptions aren’t ideal.

To play Fortnite, go to GeForce Now website in your web browser, tap the share icon and tap Add to home screen to add the service to your home screen as an app. Next, launch the GeForce Now app you just created, agree to the terms and conditions, and tap fortnite.

Before you can play the game, you must either log in to your existing account or create a new one. Choose the free membership option (you can also pay to avoid session interruptions), and enter your email, a password, a display name and your date of birth. Once your account is created, go back and press Cheek to load Fortnite.

As with Xbox Cloud Gaming, you have a number of touch controls for playing the game, as well as bringing up a keyboard, muting your microphone, copying and pasting, and other actions. And as mentioned in the previous section, it is best to play the game horizontally so that you have more screen space.
