SH73, Arthur’s Pass road connecting Canterbury and the west coast closed

Waka Kotahi NZ transport agency closed SH73 in the Craigieburn Cutting area this afternoon. The route connects the west coast and Canterbury.

  • The Lewis Pass route, SH7, via Waipara and Reefton, is the open alternative route. Additional precautions, given the icy conditions, are required on all alpine routes this week.

Contractors working to repair a culvert under SH73 this afternoon discovered a void affecting the single lane that was open to traffic during the repair work.

“It requires emergency work today,” says Jessica McFarlane, network manager for Waka Kotahi. “We will provide an update on the proposed reopening time of 5 p.m. this evening, with staff on site undertaking investigations this afternoon.”

“We appreciate that this is a sudden and unexpected shutdown for daily SH73 drivers and thank everyone for their patience as we work on this repair.”

The Craigieburn Cup is located north of Castle Hill and south of Pearson Lake.
