Football: Macalester’s Rex Desso recognized by NCAA as statistical leader
ST. PAUL, Minn. – Principal Receiver of Macalester College Rex Desso (Evergreen, Colo./Lakewood) led NCAA Division III in receptions per game, with the NCAA recognizing its statistical category leaders for the 2021 season. Desso caught 100 passes in 10 games for an average of 10 .0 receptions per game.
Desso, who made D3football.com All-Region 6 Third Team and All-MIAC First Team, also ranked fourth nationally in receiving yards per game (126.6) and fifth for receiving yards (1,266). In addition to school records for receptions and receiving yards in a season, Desso broke single-game records with 18 catches against St. Scholastica on Nov. 6 and 243 receiving yards in the season finale against Carleton. November 13. He also scored eight touchdowns this season and played in seven games with at least 100 receiving yards. Desso, who will return to the team next fall, has 125 catches for 1,669 yards and 11 touchdowns in his career.
Desso’s 10.0 receptions per game was more than one catch per game more than second-seeded Cody Gustafson of Grove City, who averaged 8.8 receptions per game. Desso was also one of three Division III players to record 100 receptions in 2021.
Macalester finished 3-7 overall and 1-3 in the MIAC Skyline Division in his first season in MIAC since 2001.
