If construction continues, it will be located on the site of what is now a parking lot north of the Midtown Plaza mall. It has been the favored location of the municipal administration since the announcement of the potential sites this summer.

Councilors were asked to choose between the Midtown lot, known as Site A, and Site B – lands on the northern edge of downtown currently occupied by city courts. They voted unanimously in favor of the A. Coun site. Darren Hill was not present for the vote.

“What I’m not deciding today is whether this project is viable,” noted the adviser. Hilary Gough, noting that she supported Site A, but did not feel obligated to vote for the district in the future.

City technical services manager Dan Willems told council that Wednesday’s decision “opens the door” to more detailed funding and design proposals before a final council vote on whether to proceed with a project. .

He said city staff expect to have a detailed fundraising program in front of councilors by this time next year.

Council previously instructed city staff to pursue the downtown district with minimal impact on property taxes. Administrative staff suggested options such as special levies, taxes on rental cars and hotel stays, and borrowing from expected tax revenue from the development.

On Wednesday, several councilors repeated that they would not support any increase in property tax for the project.

Speakers in support of Site A at Wednesday’s meeting included representatives from the Saskatoon Downtown Business Improvement District, Saskatoon Destination Marketing Hotels and Discover Saskatoon. Representatives from the SaskTel Center and TCU Place also spoke in favor of this location, as did a speaker on behalf of the Saskatoon Blades and Saskatoon Rush.

Bill Logar, speaking on behalf of the Midtown Plaza property, said choosing Site A would prompt the mall to do more with the underground connections linking the mall to the future site of the arena, TCU Place and the parking lot of the other side of the mall in Toys r us.

Mayor Charlie Clark asked Logar what he thought of the potential parking and traffic issues. Logar said experience running malls across Canada has shown that downtown entertainment facilities tend to cause less traffic disruption than expected and that many customers quickly adopt public transit. public or other modes of transport.

Cary Tarasoff, a former mayoral candidate, was the only one of 10 speakers to voice doubts about the proposed project. He suggested the city’s consultation process on site selection was flawed and failed to give a voice to people who don’t want a new project to proceed.

Discussion of a downtown arena began in 2018, with a consultant’s report commissioned by the Boards of Directors of TCU Place and the SaskTel Center advising that both facilities are approaching the end of their useful life. Later that year, the council voted to have city staff focus on downtown to host an events and entertainment district anchored by a new arena and convention center.

The city has since added the prospect of a substantial renovation of TCU Place, rather than a replacement. One of the factors officials cited at the board in pushing for Site A was its proximity to TCU Place.

The board also voted unanimously to approve the purchase of Site A land for $25 million. The money will come from the city’s real estate reserve, which is funded by the sale of municipal land, not property taxes. The funds should then be returned to the reserve fund once funding for the project has been secured. City planners, city councilors and Mayor Charlie Clark have all said throughout the process that the project will require provincial and federal funding to move forward.

Willems said city staff expects to return to the board next month with an additional $17 million in land purchases adjacent to the site in support of the project.

Mastodon looks like the old internet. “Welcome to Mastodon, where you can boost a toot from hellsite.site to mas.to, but remember CW policy and startup doxers or your instance might be defederated” is a phrase that will make sense eventually – but which probably won’t mean anything on day one.

Social media startups cost ten percent, but few are as proudly distinct from the competition as the countercultural network that gained millions of new users over the past week as Elon Musk sparks an exodus from Twitter.

Mastodon is not a site. Instead, it’s a protocol, a system of rules for running your own social network that can also interact with any other following the same code. Some of these social networks are large and of general interest: Mastodon.social, set up by Eugen Rochko, the German software developer who created the Mastodon protocol, has 169,000 users. Others are the opposite: hellsite.site, set up by Mastodon user @goat, has 440 members proudly “shitposting” and the slogan “be gay do crimes”.

On the surface, any given Mastodon site, or “instance” as they’re called, looks and feels like a slightly modified version of Twitter. Users make posts (affectionately called toots, not tweets) that are short (although typically 500 characters, not 280), re-shareable (“boosted” not “retweeted”) and replyable.

There are a few additional features, such as a Content Warning (CW) option that lets you hide posts behind a warning – as useful for movie spoilers or niche rants as it is for objectionable content or upsetting material.

But the operation of the network is radically different. Each instance can be linked to any other, and users are free to follow posters on their own instances or across the wider “fedivers”. Administrators create and apply rules on their own instances; on a bigger one it could be a full time job, while on a smaller instance it’s no more work than being in charge of an average sized whatsapp group chat. And the rules can be as strict or as loose as they want. Rochko’s original Mastodon example, for example, prohibits “racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, xenophobia, or casteism,” as well as sharing “intentionally false or misleading information.”

If you wish, you can switch to another instance with more flexible rules, but be careful: administrators can ban users, but they can also ban entire instances, by “defederating” them. When the right-wing social network Gab switched to the Mastodon protocol in 2019, it brought with it a million users and was quickly defederated by almost every major forum, leaving users in a universe of bubbles where they could talk to each other. , but not interact with the wider social network.

As Mastodon grows, these differences in standards cause friction. Journa.host is an instance set up by former New Yorker Staff member Adam Davidson, who attempts to offer a form of verification for the platform, only allowing entries from journalists who prove they are who they say they are. But the instance has been defederated by nearly 50 others, according to a tracker, with reasons ranging from “privacy risk” to “mainstream propagandists” to simply “Journos.”

The service also suffers from more prosaic technical issues as its user base grows by millions every week: larger instances struggle to update posts in real time, admins watch the moderation backlog grow and costs rise for volunteer hosts who never expected to be absorbing a sizable fraction of traffic from a $44 billion social network.

But behind it all, the promise – of a grassroots approach to social media, where communities decide for themselves what they will and will not put up with, without thin-skinned billionaires taking load at will – enough to keep users sticking around. And eventually, the jargon will start to make sense too.

The S&P 500 rose 0.96% and the Nasdaq Composite gained 0.85%. But whether the market can add to those gains this week will largely be determined by the outcome of the US midterm elections and whether Republicans take control of Congress.

The Law Enforcement (ED) Directorate carried out raids at four locations on Saturday, including the home of Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia’s personal assistant (PA), as part of an alleged probe into the money laundering she had launched on the Delhi government’s now abandoned excise policy.

On Saturday afternoon, Sisodia tweeted: “They raided my house filing a fake FIR, searched bank records, also went to my village, but found nothing against me. Today they found nothing in ED’s raid at my PA, so now they’ve arrested him and taken him away. BJP people! So much fear of losing the elections.

ED sources said Sisodia’s AP was pulled over for questioning. “We have searched his home and will question him in connection with the alleged destruction of evidence. We haven’t arrested him so far,” a source said.

The ED case, filed in September, is based on a CBI FIR filed in August. The CBI had booked Sisodia, three excise department officials and several vendors and distributors among the 15 defendants it had charged in its FIR.

The CBI FIR had said, “Praveen Kumar Rai, Director, MHA…has conveyed the instructions of the competent authority to investigate the matter of irregularities in the development and implementation of the excise policy of GNCTD Delhi for the year 2021-22 by the Central Bureau of Investigation. He also forwarded a letter from LG Vinai Kumar Saxena alleging irregularities in the development and implementation of the excise policy.

A black money group that wants to dismantle the police and abolish federal immigration agencies has poured hundreds of thousands of dollars into the Arizona Senate race, giving Democratic Senator Mark Kelly a last-minute boost , whose once considerable lead evaporated before Election Day. .

Living United for Change in Arizona has spent nearly $350,000 since Oct. 21 to help the Kelly campaign, according to Federal Election Commission records. The expenses went to pay the salaries of canvassers to knock on doors in the Grand Canyon State to secure the vote for Kelly.

The donations create an uneasy alliance for Kelly, who poses as a moderate criminal justice reformer. Living United, which received funding from left-leaning billionaire George Soros, called for the Phoenix Police Department’s funding to be cut, saying, “The police don’t protect us or serve us.” The group, which staged protests outside Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities, made national headlines in October 2021 after its members filmed Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (D., Ariz.) in a bathroom on the campus of Arizona State University and fried it on her. opposition to the end of the filibuster to pass a ballot bill.

The group’s support comes at a pivotal time for Kelly, whose double-digit lead over Republican Blake Masters has vanished amid growing concerns about crime and the economy. A recent poll by progressive Data for Progress found Kelly tied with Masters. The poll also found Latino voters favored Kelly by a margin of 58 to 37, down considerably from Kelly’s support within the group in the 2020 special election.

Although the Kelly campaign is not working directly with Living United on the canvassing effort, Living United paid $210,000 to FieldCorps, a consulting firm linked to Kelly. Francisco Heredia, a Mesa councilman who owns FieldCorps, campaigned for Kelly this year. The Kelly campaign lists Heredia as a member of its “Latinos for Kelly Coalition”. Living United contributed an additional $138,546 to ADP Payroll to cover canvasser salaries, according to campaign finance information.

The Living United Political Action Committee received approximately $1 million in funding in the 2020 cycle from left-leaning campaign groups Civic Participation Action Fund and the Movement Voter Project. The militant wing of the group, which organizes anti-police and anti-ICE rallies, has been funded by numerous progressive black money groups. The Sixteen Thirty Fund and New Venture Fund, which are not required to disclose their donors, in 2019 gave $165,000 and $40,000 respectively, according to the Capital Research Center. In 2019, Soros’ Open Society Foundations donated $1.5 million to Living United “to support policy advocacy led by communities of color in Arizona.”

Living United last month campaigned for Democratic gubernatorial candidate Katie Hobbs, Fox News reported.

The Kelly campaign and Living United did not respond to requests for comment.

If you’re getting into construction sites with the new Full Site Editing (FSE) experience, you may have noticed a lack of menu items that will take you directly to the tools you need to use.

This may be because the site editor is still in beta, or because WordPress management may still be discussing whether to rename FSE. It may be best if users don’t blindly stumble upon FSE templates from the main admin menu, but some of these site building features are buried without quick access.

For example, you are three clicks away from getting to model elements. Managing reusable blocks is also hidden on a separate screen accessible through the post editor, but sends you to a new page.

When LayerWP founder Ben Townsend brought this to attention in a tweet, Roy Sivan responded with a link to a new free plugin that creates faster access to these menus.

The missing menu items extend the admin menu with links to reusable blocks, navigation menus, templates, and template parts, so they’re all a click away. It adds them to the Appearance menu under the Editor link (beta):

If you regularly work with reusable blocks or edit navigation and templates, this plugin will save you time and help you navigate the editor faster.

The missing menu items were created by Easy Amused, makers of Block Styles, a commercial plugin that allows users to further customize basic blocks with unique styles and offers “fully responsive block-level design control” . The team will add more useful menu links and admin improvements in future releases. Users can contact the development team with requests for menu items and they will consider them.

The missing menu items are available at WordPress.org. Live support is available for those who have purchased a BlockStyles subscription, and community support can be found in the plugin forums on the directory.

In the growing world of social media, TikTok has become one of the most popular video creation platforms, especially among teenagers.

Young content creators not only show off their skills, but learn about the latest trends, new technologies, and essential skills. However, on the other hand, parents are also worried about their children’s online safety and want to stay updated about their online activities.

Keeping in mind the real security concerns of parents, TikTok has an important feature called Family Pairing. The option allows parents to take care of their children and keeps them safe online.

The feature will also create a bond of trust between parents and children and also bridge the communication gap between them. Parents will learn to trust their children, while teenagers will develop a sense of responsibility while creating content.

In fact, parents don’t have to use their teenagers’ devices and can easily monitor children’s TikTok accounts from their personal mobile devices. For those who are still unfamiliar with the feature, let’s explore the option in detail.

Want to ensure a safer TikTok experience for your child? Here’s how you can do it
Family Pairing offers a series of personalized security settings. Once parents have created their TikTok account, they can easily link it to their child’s account. The various security settings offered in the feature include:

daily screen time

Time management is at the heart of parents’ concerns. They want teens to use the app in a disciplined way. With the help of Daily Screen Time, parents can set a time limit for kids to use the app. Even if the teen has multiple devices, the setting will automatically apply to all those devices.

Restricted mode

TikTok has a strict content quality policy and only proper content is allowed on the platform. However, parents sometimes feel that certain types of content may not be suitable for their teenagers. Restriction mode helps parents block content that they think might harm their child.

Look for

Using the search parameter, a parent can decide which person, content and hashtag the child can explore. They can also choose the specific sound to block from the search bar.

Discoverability

With the help of the discoverability setting, the teen’s account can be set to two modes. The first is “private mode” which gives teens the power to decide who can see their profile. The second is “public mode”, which allows anyone to browse the account.
Suggest an account to others

Like other social media platforms, TikTok also offers a list of suggested accounts. By using Suggest an Account, the parent has the power to choose whether or not the teen’s account is on the recommended list.

Go the extra mile

In addition to the aforementioned settings, TikTok Family Pairing provides control over some crucial options. This includes direct messages where the parent can either disable the message option or restrict who can message the teen’s account. It is relevant to mention here that direct message is not available for teenagers aged 13-15.

Thereafter, parents have the power to decide who can browse the videos their teens like and also restrict people’s comments.

For now, parental controls are only available for mobile apps. For TikTok on mobile and desktop web browsers, Google’s Family Center or Apple’s Parental Controls (for iOS) can be used.

Tough Irish, come together: 14 years after Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson bickered in Bruges, they reunited with director Martin McDonagh for The Banshees of Inisherin, a “macabre dark comedy of toxic male pride”. No change there, then. After American stays, McDonagh revisits a place of the 1920s in the west of Ireland closer to the first plays that made his name.

There are many directions to take from here: Gleeson’s acting sons Domhnall and Brian; McDonagh’s partner, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, but let’s stick with Brendan himself. Before turning professional, he was a teacher at Belcamp College in Dublin: the school was housed in a Georgian mansion by Irish architect James Hoban, famous for designing the White House, where Gleeson was installed in the role of Donald Trump in the Showtime miniseries The Comey Rule.

We prefer to forget the great agent James Comey, but he will not leave. Its pivot to fiction with its Central Park West crime debut is expected next year. This, alas, has no connection to Central Park West, Darren Star’s flop soap opera that preceded Sex and the City, and is best remembered for a cast that included John Barrowman, Lauren Hutton, Raquel Welch and Mariel Hemingway.

Mariel’s grandfather was Ernest: among the films of the great man’s work is the 1943 version of For Whom the Bell Tolls, starring Gary Cooper and Ingrid Bergman. It is of course pure coincidence that the two great Swedish figures of 20th century cinema were called Bergman (the “unrelated” parenthesis is rarely deployed more) but they worked together: the Autumn Sonata of 1978 was the penultimate role of Ingrid – directed by Ingmar – in which she appeared alongside Liv Ulmann.

Although best known for Bergman’s films (Ingmar), Ullmann has also directed, including taking on another Swedish giant in Strindberg’s Miss Julie; Jessica Chastain and Colin Farrell starred. This happened in 2014, a point that seems to have launched Farrell’s current iteration of a handsome, aging leading man into more interesting character roles (The Lobster, The Beguiled, Widows, After Yang), with the occasional blockbuster added (The Batman). Which updates us, with Farrell and Gleeson darkly bickering on a remote island, over a plain pint.

To eat Before sailing to the Aran Islands, where much of the film was shot, why not stop at the bilingual Cafe Pota, where everything is on offer from ‘grá-nola’ to potted crab.

Lily Not on the islands, but still largely in the west of Ireland, Colin Barrett’s recent Homesickness is a brilliant collection of dark and deep short stories.
