BYU Football adds Sailor Coug logo to helmet for Baylor game
WACO, Texas – The BYU Football Team Kit always has a few tricks up its sleeve.
After Baylor announced that they will be wearing a fan-favorite “Sailor Bear” helmet for this Saturday’s game, BYU must have had some fun.
BYU Director of Player Experience and Gear Operations Billy Nixon has revealed that the “Sailor Coug” will be added to the back of the Cougars’ navy helmets against Baylor.

This is the first time BYU has had the “Sailor Coug” logo on its football helmet.
BYU’s Sailor Coug logo has been around the university since the 1980s. However, in 2014 BYU hired a logo design company to give the Sailor Coug an updated look and it was the sticker that will be on display this weekend on BYU’s football helmet.
Now that both teams will sport a sailor logo on their lids, the official BYU football Twitter account has dubbed Saturday’s contest on the banks of the Brazos River “The Sailor Game.” It’s one way to start laying the groundwork for making BYU against Baylor a rivalry when the Cougs join the Big 12 in 2023. Or it’s just another way to add some extra juice to an already intriguing game. .

BYU has improved its uniform identity over the past year under the leadership of Nixon and his team. Cougars now have 26 different uniform combinations to choose from each week. BYU plans to wear a different suit for each game in 2021.
This week’s uniform suit against Baylor includes the aforementioned navy helmet, a white jersey, and navy pants.
Baylor will go with an all-green look in honor of their homecoming festivities.
The No. 19 BYU vs. Baylor kicks off on Saturday, Oct. 16 in Waco at 1:30 p.m. (MT). The game will be televised nationally on ESPN and aired on KSL NewsRadio, with coverage starting at 10 a.m. live from Waco.
