Volvo switched at the end of September to the seventh version of its logo in the company’s 97-year history, a new all-black, graphically flattened design that replaces the three-dimensional chrome-effect appearance symbol (below) that it has. used in the past several years.

The change came surprisingly quietly – there was no such announcement or press release that General Motors or Nissan made when those automakers recently redeemed their badges.

Instead, the new logo spread across the brand’s various social media channels, and it was only after being pushed by multiple outlets that the Swedish company confirmed it was indeed putting update its brand image.

It remains to be seen whether the new logo will appear on the automaker’s cars as well, or simply on its promotional and corporate materials.

The Volvo logo bears the shape of the chemical symbol for iron and first appeared on a Volvo car in 1927. The new logo is somewhat of a throwback to those earlier models, with the font inside the symbol being almost exactly the same.

The push towards new, modernized, flatter logos started to spread across the auto industry around the start of 2020, starting with Volkswagen.
