Quaker Oats producers will obtain LEAF Marque accreditation

PepsiCo, one of the world’s largest food companies, has announced new plans to help its 300 Quaker oat producers achieve LEAF Marque certification.

Over 300 oat growers will achieve LEAF Marque accreditation over the next two years and will be encouraged to adopt regenerative farming practices.

Quaker oats are grown and ground in the UK. Three-quarters of the growers are within 100 miles of the Quaker – Cupar Mill – oat factory in Fife, Scotland.

LEAF Marque is an environmental insurance scheme run by the agricultural organization LEAF (Linking Environment And Farming), which requires farmers to take a new approach to ensuring sustainable agriculture.

Thanks to the principles of integrated agricultural management, crops grown on LEAF Marque accredited farms contribute to the improvement of biodiversity, soil health, water and air quality.

As part of this partnership, PepsiCo and LEAF will provide Quaker farmers with additional tools and support in their journey to achieve LEAF Marque certification.

Organizations say it will help them embrace more circular agriculture and put health and sustainability at the center of their operations.

The investment builds on PepsiCo’s existing progress to support more sustainable oat crops across the UK.

Its Oat Growth Guide, launched in 2019, used more than one million data points to provide growers with information to optimize resources and improve yield.

Archana Jagannathan, Director of Sustainability at PepsiCo UK said: “We are working to innovate and optimize the way our crops are grown to save water, reduce carbon emissions and improve soil health, among other benefits.

“Expanding our partnership with LEAF is an important step in helping us achieve our goals of positive agriculture,” she added.

“This is an extension of our existing efforts to adopt and introduce regenerative British oats with our farming partners Quaker, helping them produce the best quality oats while protecting the land.

As the certification process progresses, the LEAF Marque logo will begin to appear on Quaker oat packaging from 2023.

Caroline Drummond, Managing Director of LEAF, added: “Our partnership with Quaker UK and all of their UK oat producers signals an important step forward in our shared sustainability commitments.

“We are extremely proud to be working together on better, smarter and more climate-positive agricultural solutions provided by LEAF Marque. “
